Abeldt earns American baseball invitation

FORT WORTH – For the second straight summer, TCU baseball Ben Abeldt has earned an invitation to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp. Last year he was included in the final selection.

Abeldt, a first-team all-Big 12 performer, made 26 team appearances this year. He was 3-0 with eight saves and posted an ERA of 1.83. Abeldt recorded 54 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings of work. In the competition, Abeldt played in 16 games and went 2-0 with five saves. He fanned 34 in 30 innings of work and posted a 1.50 ERA.

During the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp, 56 of the top college players not eligible for the draft will participate in a two-game Stars vs. Stripes intrasquad series in North Carolina on June 26 and 27. USA Baseball will name the final Collegiate National Team – including an International Friendship Series selection and a Summer League Tour selection – after training camp on June 29.

Both Training Camp games will be played on June 26 and 27 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The first pitch of both games is at 6:35 PM ET. The International Friendship Series roster will next take on Chinese Taipei in a five-match series, while the Summer League Tour roster will face select teams from the Appalachian League and the Coastal Plain League in a four-match series . The schedule will culminate in a July 4 game between the two US Collegiate National Team squads on July 4 in Fayetteville, NC.

TCU has a successful history with USA Baseball. Jake Arrieta was the first Horned Frog to earn a spot on the National Team roster, doing so in 2006, the same year former head coach Jim Schlossnagle served as an assistant coach. In 2010, Kyle Winkler pitched for Team USA. TCU had a pair of reps in 2011 when Josh Elander and Andrew Mitchell were part of the squad. The Frogs had three player representatives in 2013, as Riley Ferrell, Brandon Finnegan and Preston Morrison were part of the squad managed by Schlossnagle. Evan Skoug earned a spot on the team in 2016 and Sean Wymer was part of the squad in 2017. Former head coach Bill Mosiello served as an assistant with the 2017 U18 squad. In the summer of 2022, Brayden Taylorearned a spot on the 26-man roster, while River trips attended the training camp. In the summer of 2023 we saw three Horned Frogs, Abeldt, Karson Bowen And Anthony Silva earn invitations to training camp, with Abeldt earning a roster spot.
