Washington state’s population reaches 8 million people, new data shows

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA ( – For the first time in history, the total population of Washington state reaches 8 million people.

Recent data from the Washington state Office of Financial Management shows that more than 329,000 people were born in or moved to Washington between April 2020 and April 2024.

That number includes more than 11,000 new residents in Whatcom County, which ranked among the top 10 counties for population growth. Bellingham remains the most populous county with more than 97,000 total residents as of April 2024. Unincorporated Whatcom County comes in second with more than 92,000.

Lynden has consistently overtaken Ferndale for third place in recent years, with both cities having populations of over 16,000.
