Sheriff’s deputies shoot carjacking suspect after chase in Pico Union – NBC Los Angeles

An investigation is underway after police opened fire on a man who led police on a chase in the Pico Union neighborhood.

The chase began sometime before 2:45 p.m. after sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a carjacking in East Los Angeles. The chase ended near the intersection of Venice Boulevard and Vermont Avenue after the driver crashed into a pole.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that shots were fired. It is unclear whether officers fired at the driver during the chase or after the car came to a stop. The department said the driver rammed police patrol cars multiple times.

Video from NewsChopper 4 showed a bulletproof sedan sitting on the sidewalk at the intersection. Emergency responders were then seen transporting the driver to an area hospital. LASD did not provide details on the extent of the man’s injuries.
