Obituary of John Donovan – MA

John E. Donovan Lifelong Chelmsford resident, WWII vet; 86 CHELMSFORD — John E. Donovan, 86, a lifelong resident of Chelmsford, died Tuesday, April 10, at Lowell General Hospital.

He was the beloved husband of the late Helen P. (Sullivan) Donovan, who died in 1982.

He was born in Chelmsford on June 11, 1925 and was a son of the late John E. and Helen (Cunningham) Donovan. He was educated in Chelmsford schools.

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.

Before his retirement, he owned Suburban Oil Company in Chelmsford for many years.

John had a lifelong love of animals. He was an avid rider and trained them for many years. He also enjoyed trips to Pennsylvania Dutch Country and West Virginia, where he educated and taught others how to live and eat healthily, and his Saturday morning breakfasts with the boys.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of the United States Trotting Association.

John is survived by his daughter, Debra A. Shaw of Chelmsford; three grandchildren, Douglas Shaw and his wife, Jillian of Littleton, Ashley Shaw of Chelmsford and John Shaw of Chelmsford; two great-grandchildren, Carter and Charlotte Shaw of Littleton; several nieces and nephews; and many friends including Richard Lahue of Chelmsford.

He was also the father-in-law of the late Ronald D. Shaw; brother of the late Forest Donovan and H. Virginia Sullivan; and lifelong friend of the late Lester Fletcher.

DONOVAN — Visitation will take place at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen Street, CHELMSFORD on Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Church, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. Burial in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the MSPCA at Nevins Farm, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
