It is currently more expensive to rent in Butte than in Missoula

If you had to guess which city in Montana has the highest rents, it’s probably a pretty easy answer. But could you have guessed that Butte’s rent would be even higher than renting a home in Missoula?

Evelyn Pyburn of The Big Sky Business Journal joined me on the radio to say that Bozeman has the highest average rent in Montana. But look, Butte has a higher average rent than Missoula.

Bozeman highest rent

“Monthly rent in Bozeman is significantly higher than the rest of the state’s most populous areas, with average rent in Billings currently at $1,431 per month, $1,395 in Missoula, $1,300 in Great Falls and $1,475 in Butte. Currently, rent in Bozeman is $2,400 per month. .” –Big Sky Business Journal Hot Sheet Monday June 10, 2024.

If there’s an expert on the Butte housing market out there who wants to get a hold of me, I’d love to hear your thoughts on why the average rent in Butte is higher than Missoula. Is it because of the beautiful old buildings in Uptown Butte that can be renovated into more expensive homes that drive up the average price? Something else?

Evelyn Pyburn noted that Kiplinger Personal Finance recently stated that Great Falls was one of the cheapest places to live in the United States. Great Falls ranked 16th in the country as one of the cheapest places to live in the US. Evelyn thought that was quite ironic, considering Bozeman is one of the most expensive places to live in the US. And it’s not just about Bozeman, it’s about Gallatin County as a whole, Evelyn added.
