Obituary of Martha Kafesjian – CA

Kafesjian, Martha Jane (Ryland), passed away on January 20, 2007 in Sandy, Utah, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born on August 7, 1933 to Martha May Woods and Robert Baird Ryland, in Wheeling, West Virginia, where she graduated from Triadelphia High School. She also attended the Pennsylvania College for Women in Pittsburgh and Purdue University, where she met and married, and later divorced, Ralph Kafesjian in 1955. Mitzi loved the outdoors, especially the Southwest, and traveled there extensively. She was a lifelong learner and an avid reader who immersed herself in every subject she practiced, ranging from geology to gemology and mineralogy to photography. Mitzi regularly participated in field trips throughout the West, where he learned about Native American culture, natural history and bird watching. She is survived by her three children, Mark, Scott and Susan; loving daughter-in-law, Shirley; granddaughter, Kelsey; soon-to-be son-in-law, Tim, and her brother, Robert B. Ryland and his wife Christine of Richmond, Virginia, all of whom loved her dearly and will miss her dearly. Her mother, father and sister, Susan Effie Olmstead, preceded her in death. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Mitzi are asked to donate to her favorite charity, the Audubon Society.
