Dickinson softball saves the best for last, repeats as Class A state champions – InForum

DICKINSON – The Bismarck softball team appeared to have control of Saturday’s North Dakota Class A state championship game, until the Demons didn’t.

Big hits and three Bismarck errors helped Dickinson score eight unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings in an 8-2 win in the title game at the Sanford Sports Complex.

Dickinson repeated as Class A state champions and has won three of the past four state titles.

Bismarck took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. Dru Kautzman singled in a run in the third inning and in the fourth, Josie Schell tripled to center field and scored on Mya Jone’s RBI single.

But things started to go Dickinson’s way with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Madelynn Bren singled and Myah Merry doubled to put runners on second and third base. Bismarck fouled Jenna Decker’s catch to center, allowing Bren and Merry to score and tie the game. Ava Jahner followed with a two-run home run to left.

In the sixth inning, an error, a wild pitch and another error led to a run that gave Dickinson a 5-2 lead. A one-out single and a walk led to Merry’s sacrifice fly and Decker ripped a two-run double to left to make it 8-2.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under the byline “staff.” Often the byline “staff” is used when rewriting basic news briefs that come from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and require little or no reporting. Sometimes this byline is used when a news story contains multiple authors or when the story is formed by merging previously reported news from different sources. If outside sources are used, this will be noted in the story.
