Wallace J. SmithFitchburg Paper Co. retired, World War II vet; 87 FITCHBURG Wallace J. Smith, 87, died Thursday, May 15, after an extended illness, at Highlands in Fitchburg. He was born in Fitchburg, November 15, 1920, the son of the late Harrison and Laura (Gingras) Smith .Mr. Wallace was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Philippines and New Guinea during World War II. He worked most of his life in the paper industry in Fitchburg for Crocker Paper, Weyerhauser and James River, retiring in 1983. traveling with his wife, Viola, dancing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. He was a former member of the Fitchburg Booster Club, the American Friendship Association and the Disabled Veterans. Wallace is survived by his wife of 62 years, Viola (Butler) Smith; one daughter, Janice Smith of Washington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Jeanne Smith of Massachusetts, Alan and Ela Ramsch-Smith of Texas, and Michael Smith and Rita Coutu of New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Jennifer Demarais of Washington, Melanie and Alexander Smith of Massachusetts; a sister, Rita Rodriquenz of Fitchburg; a sister-in-law, Yvette Butler of Leominster; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Emile and Francis Smith; and two sisters, Evelyn Bonner and Jeanette Nichols. SMITH A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 19, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 49 Woodland St., Fitchburg. Burial with military honors will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, 486 Clarendon St., Fitchburg. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Louis M.
