Chaos broke out at the annual Gloucester Township Day event last weekend.

It was a beautiful evening as families gathered at Veteran’s Park in Gloucester Township. They were waiting for a drone light show to begin when police said event security noticed “an influx of youth and young adults being dropped off at the event.”

As many as 500 young people began to gather on the basketball courts in the park and several fights broke out afterwards.

Dozens of teenagers rampaged through the crowd, terrorizing families trying to enjoy the evening. Most wore dark clothing covering their heads and some wore dark masks.

Police quickly made two arrests but say the crowd “remained hostile and disorderly” and the fighting lasted two hours.

The family-oriented Gloucester Township Day event has been held for more than 40 years and raises money for local scholarships.

Police officers injured

As police tried to disperse the crowd, a Camden man rode into the crowd on a bicycle and crashed into the back of a Gloucester Township police officer, knocking him to the ground.

Ronald Jones, 33, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. He was also charged with escape for trying to slip out of his handcuffs.

At least two other officers were slightly injured.

Where did these children come from?

Investigators say most were dropped off at the event from out of town.

A statement from police said: “It was determined that most of the youth groups were not from Gloucester Township and were dropped off and in need of rides.”

Police Chief David Harkins says the incident remains under investigation.

“The lawless groups of youth and unsupervised young people acting with total disregard for others have ruined a major family event,” Hawkins said. “This type of lawlessness and violent riotous behavior will not be tolerated and will not benefit the community of Gloucester Township.”

According to Gloucester Township Police, the following arrests were made during the incident:
