Urgent Product Recall in New York State

As the weather warms up, several fresh fruits and vegetables are coming into season, including one of the most popular vegetables (well, technically fruits) around: cucumbers.

A staple of salads, often found on burgers (in pickled form, of course) and used as an eye cover at the spa (ahhhh, we feel refreshed just thinking about them), cucumbers are not only at their peak freshness during the summer months here in New York, but they are also packed with health benefits.

According to the Cleveland ClinicCucumbers are packed with nutrients like fiber, vitamins A, K and C, potassium and calcium, not to mention incredibly hydrating because they are also full of water. It’s no wonder they are one of the most popular vegetables to consume in the summer months.

Unfortunately, a recent recall here in New York shows that the cucumbers you have in your refrigerator may be doing the exact opposite: making you healthy.

Recall of cucumbers in New York State due to Salmonella

Fourteen states, including New York, received large shipments of cucumbers from the company Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. who may be contaminated with salmonella, according to the FDA.

The large, dark green cucumbers, approximately 1.5 to 2.1 inches in diameter and 6 to 10 inches long, were shipped to distribution centers, wholesalers and food distributors between May 17 and 21.

Salmonella is a potentially deadly organism that is especially dangerous for people with weaker immune systems, such as children and the elderly. Symptoms of salmonella exposure range from fever and stomach problems to more serious complications such as arterial infections.

If you think you may have purchased some of the recalled cucumbers, call the store where you purchased them to check and then throw them away or return them immediately.
