Jesus Sanchez, University of New Mexico

Jesus Sanchez is a BA/MA political science student at the University of New Mexico. A finalist for the 2024 Truman Scholarship and Clauve Outstanding Senior 2024, Jesús is passionate about basic needs and welfare policy. Jesús previously hosted a conference sponsored by New Mexico’s Higher Education Department on food and housing insecurity on college campuses and what student leaders can do to advocate for the basic needs of their peers. He is also a member of the UNM Political Science Honors program. His previous work experience at the New Mexico Legislative Education Study Committee and Think New Mexico helped him develop his interest in working in public policy. Jesús has previously conducted research through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship on how effective different forms of well-being are in reducing income inequality within a country. After graduation, Jesús plans to pursue a doctorate in education policy, with the goal of working for the New Mexico Department of Higher Education as a policy analyst and advocating for the physical and mental well-being of students, staff and faculty.
